We met in 1998 in Manila, The Philippines, while I was working as a Consular Officer at the U.S. Embassy. Yuki was a Japanese-English Translator at that time. She and I frequented to the same bar along Mabini Street not very far from the ancient Malate Catholic Church. The bar, The Oar House, was a popular hangout for Filipino journalists, foreign aid workers, and locals from the neighborhood. I saw Yuki there almost everyday, usually eating eggplant parmesan and playing bumber pool. Oddly enough, I have never seen her eat eggplant parmesan or play bumper pool since! After a month, we were finally formally introduced to each other by the bar owner Chino and other mutual friends who are still our good friends today. She was a woman with few words and a smiling face.............Rick
